Womens training courses becoming more popular and accessible

There has been a significant rise in the numbers of people taking up vocational courses in past few months, with trades like plumbing and decorating proving the most popular.

The catalyst behind this increase is the rise of women enrolling in training courses, with training providers now offering a wider selection of courses for women wanting to learn a trade and  start a career without paying increased University tuition fees. Colin Hindmarsh of Harlow College said n a recent interview with The Guardian newspaper:

“We’re finding that our students are becoming more entrepreneurial, they want to be in charge of their own destiny and these sorts of vocational courses allow them to set up their own businesses… We’ve had a significant increase in the number of women on this kind of course, most noticeably in painting and decorating. At level 2, two thirds of our students are female.”

The popularity of vocational courses in general has been steadily increasing over recent years as young people are becoming increasingly proactive and eager to learn a trade and seize control of their futures after the recession and the subsequent rise in unemployment.

One of the reasons that vocational courses for women are more attractive to women could be the ‘market niche’ qualified women tradespeople can offer. Other women and pensioners have been shown to be much more likely to hire a woman trades person as they feel safer and more comfortable letting a woman into the house.

Also, the rise in women interested in the traditionally male dominated trades and professions like plumbing and electrician could be the impact of new green technologies, which make these careers seem more attractive, worthwhile and accessible to women looking for a fresh start and a new career. Womens training courses are therefore offering women a chance to get qualified and begin a career in a rewarding and fulfilling profession.

As these professions can offer a starting salary of around £30,000 – £50,000 it is no surprise that womens training courses have been growing in popularity over the years.

RF Training offers vocational courses for women and men at their purpose built training centres in Manchester and Birmingham.
