Which social networks are best for my type of business @LucysHall

Time after time I hear small businesses and freelancers say they just don’t have the time to invest in thier social media marketing. One of the main problems businesses seem to have is to know which social network to invest their time in. Some people think that they need to be on every social network but actually not only can this be time consuming it could be damaging for your business and how clients or potential customers perceive you. For example: if you have a facebook page set up with no cover photo, one like and no content and you have the link on your website to this page it may give people a negative impression of your service or products. The same applies to LinkedIn, you may have a profile set up, a link to your profile from your website but what must people think if they land on one of your social profiles that’s not been set up properly and has seen no activity at all?

Here are some handy tips on choosing which social networks to use for your business:

Which social networks are best for my type of business

If you are a solicitor or offer a professional or confidential service chances are facebook won’t work for you, it’s simply not the right environment for your services. Facebook thrives on sharing images and rich content and is much better suited to brands, local shops or companies that sell products or make crafts as it gives you the opportunity to share your latest products and create special offers. Can you really see a solicitor or IFA offering a BOGOF deal on facebook?

As a professional service provider, LinkedIn is a social network that will totally work for you. It’s a professional business networking website that give you the opportunity to show your full career history, projects that you have worked on, recommendations from previous clients and endorsements of your skills. This is a great place to showcase your skills and to network with potential clients. Even if you spent an hour per month housekeeping, connecting with customers, asking for recommendations and sharing the occasional blog post it will make a big difference to the way potential customers perceive you and your business.

Twitter – Twitter is a social network that could work for almost anyone. It’s easy to use and a great way to build a following of targeted clients or customers. The other great thing about twitter is it can almost look after it’s self. If you have decided you only have time for facebook then you could link your twitter account to your facebook page so that any facebook post you make will also show on your twitter feed thus keeping it looking busy and active. This also applies to LinkedIn. When you share an update via LinkedIn you will see a small check box with the twitter bird next to it. If you select this box, your post will also be shown on twitter.

Of course there are many more social networks out there to consider such as: Instagram, Vine, You Tube, Pinterest, WordPress etc..

The most important question to ask when deciding on which social networks you should focus on for your business is how much time will it take me?  Because as you know in business time is money and if you are spending time doing anything that takes you away from your core business activities then it needs to be the right choice. Ideally the social networks you use will help you to build on existing relationships, build new relationships and at the end of the day get you more business.
