Working From Home? 7 Ways To Get More Done

Guest Post By Mel McGee

So here you are working at home… leisurely days with no stress or commuting, happily sat at your computer with a cuppa and getting so much done with fewer interruptions. But sooner or later work life and family life soon blend into one chaotic mess! Should you get the laundry done before you make those calls? You have a spare hour with no distractions. It’s so tempting to do something fun instead of something boring but essential.

The real world of working at home can be a time of constant distractions, no structure, and sometimes isolation. But don’t give up on your dream to be happy and fulfilled working from home yet! Working out a few simple strategies can make all the difference and you really can enjoy all the benefits of working at home.

Here are 7 simple ideas to help you get more done:

1. Mark Your Territory: Have a separate workspace dedicated to your business. If you don’t have a separate room then define a work area somehere.

2. Have a Structure To Your Day: It’s important now more than ever that you structure your time.

3. Exploit Technonlogy: Use e-mail, telephone and fax to communicate as much as possible, limit meetings out of the home and use automation systems.

4. Say No: Be firm with friends and family who might assume that because you are at home they can call you or call round for a chat. Sure a quick cuppa and chat might be a welcome break sometimes just don’t make it a daily habit.

5. Group tasks: If you need to pop out to do an errand try to do a few at once to minimise time spent away from growing your business

6. Outsource: If answering calls and e-mails is taking up too much time and stopping you from growing your business outsource to a Virtual Assistant or Call Minding service.

7. Get Into Work Mode: Use anything to help yourself get into work mode. Make your work space a place that you enjoy being. Maybe the clothes you wear have an impact on whether you feel ready for work. Would music keep your spirits up? Do whatever it takes to keep your self in a productive state.
