Breastfeeding When out and about @More4mums

Be Prepared

You may not be in the Boy Scouts but this is the key to a successful trip – be prepared.
You may already have a changing bag, many prams and buggies come with matching sets. Alternatively you get lots of lovely bags nowadays that look like trendy bags.
If you don’t have a changing bag look for something roomy you could use.
As you are breastfeeding you don’t need to worry about keeping milk cold or leaking milk – another benefit of Breastfeeding !
You will need to take some kind of burp cloth to keep your clothes dry and clean and prevent any little drips and spills.
You will also want to take a spare nappy or two along with baby wipes and some nappy sacks for used items.
A change of clothes for baby is also a good idea incase of any accidents – a spare sleepsuit is easy to carry.

Do I need a Nursing Cover ?

So, what about a nursing cover, hooter hider or nursing scarf?
Do I need one ?
Well no, you don’t need one but many mums find them useful. They will give you cover to feed your baby discretely, especially if you are a new mum and not sure what you are doing.
Some scarves, such as the Mama Scarf also help to give baby some support, useful if you normally use a pillow to support baby when feeding.
You could also use your blanket or pram cover thrown over your shoulder but this does have a habit of slipping at the wrong time.
If you are a more experienced Mum you may prefer to wear a suitable top and tuck baby away without a cover.
Nursing Bands such as the Belle Belly are an ingenious Band that you wear under your normal tops. When you are ready to feed you lift up your top and away you go. These are a great idea as you can wear your own clothes and they are a really cost effective item. The Breastvest works in the same way – you wear under your own clothes and it sits under your nursing bra.

Any other Breastfeeding Tips ?

Well, now you ask, I do have a few more tips for you.Think about your babies routine before you go out. Would you prefer if they slept while you were out, many babies fall asleep in the pram or buggy so this may be a good idea. Why not feed your baby before you go out and let them sleep in their pram. You can then try and be somewhere suitable when they wake up for a feed. Many shopping centres now have baby friendly facilities including feeding areas, baby changing etc. You can also happily feed in a cafe, public bench, park etc – anywhere you can sit quietly with baby.  I have fed on trains, in Tesco, in car parks, at a nativity play – you do tend to get more confident as time goes by !Try and be ready to feed your baby before they start to scream with hunger, you will get stressed and other people are more likely to stop and stare. If you are calm and prepared it should be no problem.Remember to stay calm and enjoy the time out and about with your baby – they will soon be running around causing havoc !
