How using Key Words can help you get noticed by journalists.

If like many businesses you are doing your own PR, you’ll realise how hard it can be to grab the attention of a journalist. Simply sending an email to them is often not enough.  You need to mix your communication to the max using email, phone calls, post and social media.  But if you are spending your precious time writing and planning our press release, you really don’t want it go unnoticed.

Understanding how editorial staff work can be of tremendous benefit.  I used to work on a weekly  magazine in the heart of Soho (ok…it wasn’t very glamorous, the magazine was PC Week, but it gave me an insight all the same).  I’ve seen how many press releases arrive on a journalists desk (or inbox, in this case).

Journalists receive 100′s of emails every day – seriously…but if you understand a little how editorial teams work, you can increase your chances of your press release being opened.

Journalists may not open an email immediately, but it could be filtered or kept in a folder for later use. Editorial staff may search through emails for a particular topic (much like a filing system). So if they are looking for a feature on Baby Yoga, they’ll search for this and go through the emails that have this in their subject line.

So….you see where I’m heading…you can maximise your chances of being noticed by putting specific key words in your subject line.  Of course you can always increase your chances by posting your press release to key contacts, tailoring your press release to a particular journal and actually spending time getting to know the publications on your target list.
