Is Direct Selling for You? 

If you talk to many people about Party Plan or Direct Selling they will often say things like “oh like a Tupperware party” or “you mean Pyramid Selling?”

So there is a general perception that it is a negative thing.

The name Direct Selling may also suggest to some that they need to have a sales background or try pushy selling techniques or they will simply need to prey on friends and family to the point of avoidance.

All of which are unfounded and unnecessary for the well trained and those passionate about the product they are “selling”.

To refer back to the Tupperware reference, this is a company that has been in existence since the mid 1940s and the first party was held in the UK in 1960 and are currently returning to partyplan.

There are other brands such as Avon, that are giants in the Direct Selling world that have experience umpteen recessions and many worldwide crisis and yet they go from strength to strength.

It’s an industry that attracts males and females worldwide, from every type of background and is responsibile for in excess of £2billion sales.

Due to some of the negativity of a bygonne era, there are professional bodies that ensure their members follow a code of conduct, protecting the consumer and those working with the member companies. The Direc Selling Association UK describe the opportunity this industry provides as follows:

“Direct Selling is an ideal way to start a business of your own and offers many unique opportunities. It’s a method of selling goods directly to the consumer and is the UK’s largest provider of part time earnings. It is usually made face to face – either where a product is demonstrated in the home or a catalogue is left with the customer.”

There are a variety of Direct Selling Companies selling a plethora of products, from cosmetics, to underwear and jewellery, to homewares and financial services.

There is also a wide range of methods of promoting and selling those products. One to one sales, promoting to friends and family, brochure drops or party plan

Party Plan is a popular method as it provides a group opportunity to promote the product and generally educate the customer and allow them to interact with the product. This would be considered the most productive or lucrative method of as it’s a few hours work generating on average a few hundred pounds of sales and future business.

New, modern Direct Selling companies may embrace all these methods, not limiting their representatives to any one method of sales.

It is a self employed opportunity and does require consistent, hard work to ensure the upper levels of income. However, whatever the reason for wishing to generate additional income, whether you want £100 or amount or a six figure income, with good support and training everyone can succeed and achieve those goals.
